Fischer (Purdue University, United States) and Oliver Jens Schmitt (Universität Wien, Austria) is a book that charts the history of Albania and its people, within their Balkan and European contexts.
It shows the country's journey from its ancient past, still shrouded in mystery and controversy, through its difficult transition from a particularly brutal form of communism to an evolving form of democracy and a market economy.

The book is part of the Cambridge University Press concise series of selected individual countries, intended both as university and college textbooks and as general historical introductions for general readers, travellers, and members of the business community.
