Albania to close borders with Greece after Kosovo

TIRANA, March 13 - Albania will close air, sea and road links with Greece on March 14, as the Prime Minister Edi Rama announced stricter rules to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

“Starting tomorrow (March 14) at 10:00am all the entry/exit points with Greece will be closed for all the passengers traveling through air, sea and roads (buses). As in the case of Italy, the freight transport will continue normally”, PM Rama said in a Facebook post.

There are daily flights connecting Tirana and Athens, the Greek capital. The bus lines connecting Albania and different destinations in Greece, including Thessaloniki and Athens also run daily and there is a ferry line between Saranda and Corfu.

All flights and ferries to and from Italy were suspended on March 10, as the coronavirus situation in the neighboring Italy worsened and Albania had the first two cases infected with Covid19.

The ferries to and from Italy were also suspended, but the freight transport wasn’t affected by the decision.

The government announced it will allow special planes or ferries for the evacuation of the Italian citizens out of Albania, provided they enter the country with no passengers.
