TIRANA, Feb. 5 - After 12 years, the ‘World Press Photo Exhibition 2019’, a global artistic initiative featuring photographs with substantial content, has finally come to Tirana. For the first time, the 2019 exhibition features ‘World Press Photo of the Year’ along with other press photographs taken throughout the year. The winners were selected by an independent jury who evaluated more than 78,801 photographs. The curator and manager of the exhibition, Jerzy Brinkhof, explained further details during an interview with Club FM radio.
“On Thursday there will be a photo exhibition at the National Museum, where the initiative returns after 12 years in Albania, and will continue until February 26,” he said. The exhibition travels around the world and includes two Albanian representatives, who are kept anonymous for the sake of the competition.
Brinkhof said that he is in Albania for the first time and will stay there until Friday, after the exhibition ends. The exhibition dates back to 1955 and as the curator puts it, this is a world-wide competition held once a year, where participants are individuals from companies or agencies who serve to show a particular aspect in the photograph, presenting content that fully reflect the purpose for which it was shot. According to him, the two representatives of Albania are not among the winners, which means that Albanian professional photographers have to work harder. Also, the call to be part of the competition is in December and January, which means that these calls have already been closed.
The curator explained that the ‘Photo of the Year’ is that of a girl from Honduras on the Mexican border, wailing as her mother is searched by US Border Patrol in Texas. Moreover, the participation of 43 photographers and 140 photographs from all over the world is what makes the Exhibition so diverse.
