Six migrants detained as numbers of trespassers increase

TIRANA, June 20 - Albanian police at the border with Montenegro blocked six Pakistani citizens attempting to cross the border illegally in the direction of Montenegro on Wednesday. The migrants were detained on the Bajza-Hani i Hotit road, right at the border crossing point.

Border police also arrested Albanian citizen Ardian Meta, 32-year-old Tirana resident who is now accused of illegally transporting foreign citizens across the state border in his vehicle.

Based on preliminary police information, the six foreign citizens entered Albanian territory through the border with Greece, while EU member states were their final destination.

Recent months have marked increased efforts by third-country nationals using Albanian territory as a way to reaching EU countries. In this context, border police representatives say they have increased control measures in an effort to curb any possible wave of refugees seeking to use Albania as a transit country.

According to Albanian police data, an average of ten migrants - mainly from Syria, but also Yemen, Iraq, Algeria, Libya and Pakistan - are detained in the country every 24 hours. The biggest number of migrants was registered in Shkodra, a city close to the Montenegrin border that can lead migrants to EU countries like close-by Croatia.
