TIRANA, April 11 – The parliament, who is debating the candidates for the post of the deputy head of the High Council of Justice discussed for two weeks the two candidates offered by the governing Democratic Party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha and the main opposition Socialist Party of Edi Rama.
The governing Democrats offered Elvis Cefa, already in another public post.
The opposition introduced their candidate– Ardian Visha.
Both are lawyers.
What made the distinction was the fact that Visha, who came from the opposition Socialists, was the advocate of Fatmir Mediu, former defense minister and now environment minister who was also accused of the death of 26 people at the explosion in Gerdec in 2008.
That is strange because the decision from the Socialists to offer him as the candidate runs contrary to their continuous accusation against Mediu.
True Visha defended him as a lawyer, a private one. But still many people think how the Socialists could select that person for post in the Albanian judiciary.
Besides this, questions may continue even on the other side, the governing Democrats.
Why did they fight Visha so harshly at a time when he had defended their coalition partner?
These were all questions and opinions heard during the last days from politicians and many commentators in the media.
Justice has been Albania’s Achilles’ heel in the last two decades. Its corruption, lack of efficiency or proficiency is always one of the main topics in the international reports on the country. Getting justice on democratic standards is a main issue which Albania should fulfill along its integration efforts into the European Union.
